- The EU Commission decided to register FUEN’s 1 million signatures campaign

 

With the decision on 29 March 2017, the European Union (EU) Commission decided to register the Federal Union of European Nationalities(FUEN)’ Minority SafePack Initiative – the European citizens’ initiative for the minorities in Europe.

The EU Commission had refused to register the Minority SafePack initiative of FUEN in 2013.  The General Court of the European Union announced in February 2017 and annulled the Commission’s initial decision. As a result of the reassessment of the proposed initiative, the Commission has decided to register the initiative calling for improvement of protection of people that are members of national and linguistic minorities in Europe and strengthening cultural and linguistic diversity in the EU.

- FUEN paid a study visit to Kiev

Federal union of European Nationalities (FUEN) paid a study visit to Kiev, capital of Ukraine, on 21-24 March 2017. In the first pillar of the visit a round table meeting with minority organizations which are members of FUEN was held on minority policy of Ukraine with participation of Lorant Vincze, President of FUEN, Halit Habip Oğlu, Vice-President of FUEN and Bernard Gaida, Speaker of German Minorities Working Group (AGDM).

- Two written statements on the Turkish minority in Greece to the UN Human Rights Council by FUEN

 

The Federal Union of European Nationalities(FUEN) submitted two written statements on the problems of the Turkish Minority and Rhodes-Kos Turks in Greece to 34th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council which will be held from February 27th and March 24th, 2017 in Geneva, Switzerland.

With the coordination with the Working Group of Turkish Minorities/Communities(TAG), in the two written statements prepared in co-operation with FUEN member organizations representing the Turkish minority in Western Thrace, namely the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF), the Friendship, Equality and Peace(FEP) Party, the Western Thrace Minority University Graduates Association (WTMUGA), and the member organization representing the Rhodes and Kos Turks, namely Rhodes, Kos, Dodecanese Turks Culture and Solidarity Association (ROISDER) raised the current problems of the Turkish minority in Greece.

- A pilot project implementation in six public kindergartens in Western Thrace

 

ABTTF President Halit Habip Oğlu: "Our demand is very clear that we want bilingual minority kindergartens within the minority schooling system"

The Institute of Educational Policies under the Ministry of Education of Greece declared that they would carry out a pilot project which envisages that a bilingual minority member, graduated from one of the higher education institutions in Greece, would work with a teacher in a kindergarten class in public schools in six provinces where children belonging to the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace live.

- The masjid belonging to an association of Western Thrace Turks in Imathia-Veria was closed

ABTTF President Halit Habip Oğlu: "Although it is clearly written in the statute, the requirement for a separate work permit for the masjid is typical of Greece in the sense that it put obstacles in order to intervene in the freedom of religion and belief"

 The masjid inside Imathia (Veria) Muslims Education, Culture and Sports Association, an association belonging to the Western Thrace Turks, who immigrated to Alexandria (Gida), a district in Veria-Imathia (Karafere) province of Greece, was closed on grounds that that it had no work permit for the masjid.

- Habip Oğlu met with the YTB Vice President Sayit Yusuf

Vice President of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) Halit Habip Oğlu visited Vice President of the Republic of Turkey Prime Ministry Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (Y.T.B) Sayit Yusuf  in his office in Ankara on February 10, 2017. Habip Oğlu congratulated Yusuf on his new appointment as the Y.T.B Vice President and wished him success and great achievements in his future work.

- FUEN wins on the legal struggle of European minorities

The European Court of Justice delivered that the European Commission decision  to reject the registration of FUEN’s one million signature campaign on grounds that the initiative is not within its competence was unlawful.

The General Court of the European Court of Justice delivered its judgment in favor of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) in the case of the Minority SafePack Initiative against the European Commission’s decision on 16  September 2013 to reject the registration of the one million campaign

From 14-17 December 2016 a dialogue project will take place in the House of Minorities of FUEN in Flensburg with minorities from the Caucasus region. The minorities in the Caucasus region face major challenges in finding their role in civil society. The core of the project is to create a dialogue between different ethnic and language groups.

- FUEN Turkish Minorities / Communities Working Group 3rd Meeting was held in Berlin

The Third Meeting of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) Turkish Minorities / Communities Working Group (TAG) was held on 14-17 November 2016 in Berlin, the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany. FUEN President Lorant Vincze attended to the meeting which was held in the Federal German Interior Ministry Work Building with logistical support of the FUEN Working Group of German Minorities (AGDM).
